Amazing how little nature has reclaimed this in all these years. Maybe it's the time of year but I think not.

Actually, It looks like nature is doing quite well. Most of the fairly-modern town was paved, so any green you see had to come up THROUGH the concrete.
I wonder what the animal-life is rebounding like...
Animal life is going well - they have put some groups of horses that became wild and they live there fine. Also they tried to put some buffalo but they somehow did not adapt.
Interesting fact is that bird who tend to migrate, if they breed there and then fly somewhere else, they fly in infected with radiation... so be aware of what you hunt :D
Actually, when i look at these pictures, i feel some kind of great emptyness inside, and they also let me get tears in my eyes so i just want to cry about this catastrophe....it really hurts me deep inside my heart. hope this will never happen again.

45 liquidators(those directly involved in the cleanup) have died between 1986 and 2002. And 9 children died from acute thyroid cancer, from eating radiated cow.

The accident raised concerns about the safety of the Soviet nuclear power industry, slowing its expansion for a number of years, while forcing the Soviet government to become less secretive. The now-independent countries of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with the continuing and substantial decontamination and health care costs of the Chernobyl accident. It is difficult to tally accurately the number of deaths caused by the events at Chernobyl, as the Soviet-era cover-up made it difficult to track down victims. Lists were incomplete, and Soviet authorities later forbade doctors to cite "radiation" on death certificates.[citation needed]
The 2005 report prepared by the Chernobyl Forum, led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and World Health Organization (WHO), attributed 56 direct deaths (47 accident workers, and nine children with thyroid cancer), and estimated that as many as 9,000 people among the approximately 6.6 million most highly exposed, may die from some form of cancer. Specifically, the report cited 4,000 thyroid cancer cases among children diagnosed by 2002.[2]
Although the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and certain limited areas will remain off limits, the majority of affected areas are now safe for settlement and economic activity.[3]

Thank you for a great insight into what Chernobyl looks like now. The comments about 9/11 are very sad indeed. These are two different catastrophic events and patriotic Americans should be careful about how they slate disasters. Its soo sad about what happened during that time. The photo graphical side to this as well is quite amazing and the errieness to it is scary. To think that wild boar roam the streets is mad.

Thank you for these photographs. If I could choose one place I'd like to be able to walk on this Earth unscathed, it would be inside the Chernobyl sarcophagus. 21 years of radioactive history in there.
Shame on those who throw this tragedy away claiming "9/11 was worse." Because it didn't happen in your so-amazing country doesn't mean it wasn't felt by countless people (and does not mean it shouldn't be felt by you.

Whoever posted the comment about 9/11 wasn't an American, you can tell by the way they wrote the date, and the extremely poor English. Also, the death toll from that attack (not disaster) was less than 5,000, while people will be dying in the Ukraine for decades to come, if they're able to reproduce.

I sadly feel the coming generations will never forgive us as we are going to hand over them such an earth like Chernobyl.
I've taken an interest in Chernobyl in the last couple years- as I was... 7? when it occurred. Then one night I found Elenas' "Kidd Of Speed" page with her photos of her motorcycle rides through the area.
My first thought was "Awesome... That's one of those things I pray for... Imagine- A whole city and you're the only person in it. Wanna do 180mph... have at it... watch out for the deer."
But then after time, reading more and thinking about the whole situation... What really got me in one of Elena's pictures shows a number of flatboats (barges) apparently run aground and left to rust into the water, then I saw a Google map of the same area- and the boats were not positioned the same ways in the two pictures. Which got me wondering what it would be like to be out there- all "alone" and hear a sound like two of those boats slamming together in the still of the night... Wondering what that was, wondering what could be out there in the wasteland.
In regards to some of the other posts... I don't see what any amount of public or private insurance could have done to prevent this situation. Yes, it appears that nature hasn't reclaimed much in the last 20 years. But keep in mind that this entire city was nearly entirely new . This was going to be the Soviet "City of The Future", a new jewel in the Soviet Cold War-era Crown. Also consider that the first 2/3rds of the typical decay cycle is breaking down the initial structure- softening it up from the inside out. Once the building falls and increases ground contact the cycle speeds exponentially. Considering the damage in recent pictures to be the current half-life, in another 20 years the metal structures will be twisted piles of metal that disintegrates as you try to pick it up, the stone structures will be falling to ground level, though still mostly intact, and anything not stone or steel will at best be a slightly raised mound of green grass and saplings.
The wildlife is reported to be thriving without human interference, a number of small hearty horsed was implanted and was said to be doing better in their new home than in their native ecosystem. The same was attempted with 2 Buffalo, but one seemed to be homesick and was reportedly last seen heading east (I think) through Belarus. I don't recall what happened to the other one.
And in response to the Death Tolls... Anyone that belives anything the UN claims... well, yeah... 54, 56, 58... whatever it is, would you belive anything in the area? If that's the case then this gets relegated to the "minor oops with a high loss in property value" category. Personally- I would not consider any number with less than 6 digits, and the first one can't be a one or a zero.
Earlier tonight I found a photo essay... Here that talks of a 17 year-old girl that ran outside to play in the rain when she was 3 years old, The Chernobyl Black Rain I think is what the narrator called it. Imagine- laying in a severely cut-rate orphanage/hospital dying at 17 because you wanted to play in the rain and as a small child you didn't know the danger. Watch the photo essay it tells the story better than I can ever hope to.
I consider these people to be war survivors more than victims of an "environmental incident". America did not win the Cold War against Communism, we merely succeeded in bankrupting the Soviet Communist Government. It has been said that the number one reason that led to this was the fact that it was common for this style of Russian-Built reactor to leave out a number of very costly safety systems. The savings in dollars revisited in lives...
Chernobyl was going to be the Soviet way of warning us that they too know how Nuclear Energy works, and that if push comes to shove that they can blow it up as well as we already proved we could. At the time of the incident, there were, I believe, four reactors online at the plant. Then we send spy planes flying by and we see that they are building 2 new cooling towers (unfinished- can still be seen about a KM to the SE).
Chernobyl, plain and simple, was caused by (to paraphrase Axl Rose)

I would like to take one of the tours through the "Dead-Zone" I've heard tale about... but a tourist in Chernobyl seems a little.... tacky? But I'd be more than happy to go for a ride with Elena- can you blame me? She's kinda cute. And that accent? Gro-wwwl.
The amusement park was set to open a few days after the disaster. The pictures are haunting. I feel as though I can hear the echoes of a child's laughter. The silhouettes add to the pain. It shouldn't matter where this occurred, just that it occurred. It was a tragic accident that happened in the middle of the night.
i was in a ussr army (in siberia)in that days. we knew nothing. when i come back home (lithuania)- only weak privat coments. after few years - friends, friends of my friends - victims of THIS. I don't know about the future very well - but future in chernobyl is not good for me. pain and no need for scary film.
